Brazil’s Supreme Court Flirts with Tyranny: Gilmar Mendes and Luís Roberto Barroso’s Shocking Admiration for China’s Dictatorship

    By Hotspotorlando News

In a jaw-dropping display of judicial hubris, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) has once again exposed its dangerous flirtation with leftist authoritarianism. On June 11, 2025, during a session debating the regulation of social media platforms, Justice Gilmar Mendes unleashed a bombshell that should send chills down the spine of every freedom-loving Brazilian: “We all are admirers of the Chinese regime, of Xi Jinping.” As if this weren’t alarming enough, Chief Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, known for his progressive activism, reportedly echoed similar sentiments, doubling down on the STF’s apparent infatuation with one of the world’s most oppressive regimes. Today, in Portugal, this scandal has erupted into a firestorm, with posts circulating that place Mendes at the heart of a controversy that threatens to undermine Brazil’s democratic foundations.[](

Let’s be clear: China’s “regime” under Xi Jinping is a communist dictatorship that crushes dissent, censors speech, and imprisons millions for their beliefs. The U.S. State Department has consistently flagged China for its egregious human rights abuses, including the genocide of Uighur Muslims and the suppression of religious freedoms. Yet, here we have Brazil’s highest court, tasked with upholding the Constitution, openly praising a system that stands in direct opposition to the democratic values it swore to protect. This is not a mere rhetorical misstep—it’s a betrayal of the Brazilian people.

The leftist undertones of Mendes’ and Barroso’s declarations are impossible to ignore. Mendes, a long-serving justice with a history of cozying up to progressive causes, made his comment while discussing a Chinese proverb often misattributed to Xi Jinping, signaling a troubling admiration for China’s results-driven, censorship-heavy governance model. Barroso, who has never shied away from judicial activism, has a track record of pushing progressive agendas, from ordering transgender prisoners into women’s facilities to equating homophobia with racism. His alignment with Mendes’ sentiments only confirms what conservatives have long feared: the STF is becoming a bastion of leftist ideology, eager to emulate authoritarian regimes under the guise of “regulating” free speech.

The timing of this scandal couldn’t be more damning. Just as the STF voted 6-5 to hold social media platforms accountable for user content—a move critics warn could stifle free expression—Mendes’ and Barroso’s praise for China’s iron-fisted approach raises red flags. Are they signaling a desire to import China’s Great Firewall to Brazil? Social media posts on X have exploded with outrage, with users calling the STF’s remarks “absurd” and accusing the court of “flirting with despotism.” One user wrote, “Gilmar Mendes elogia o regime autoritário chinês de Xi Jinping, que esmaga liberdades. O STF flerta com o despotismo, desprezando a democracia que jurou defender.” Another warned, “Dictatorship only grows in Brazil. This is so tragic for 🇧🇷, for 🇺🇸 and for the entire

The controversy has now spilled across borders, with Portugal amplifying the outrage. A post circulating today in Lisbon has placed Mendes in an even more precarious light, though details remain murky. What’s clear is that his and Barroso’s comments have ignited a global backlash, with conservatives in Brazil and beyond sounding the alarm. The STF’s apparent admiration for a regime that jails dissidents and monitors citizens with dystopian surveillance is not just tone-deaf—it’s a direct threat to Brazil’s hard-won democracy.

This isn’t the first time the STF has courted controversy. Under Barroso’s leadership, the court has granted itself unprecedented power, investigating former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters while clashing with global figures like Elon Musk. Mendes, too, has a history of overreach, from authorizing searches against conservative lawmakers to pushing contentious bills that undermine Indigenous rights. Their leftist leanings have long been evident, but praising China’s dictatorship crosses a line that cannot be ignored.

Conservatives in Brazil must rally against this judicial overreach. The STF’s cozying up to communist ideals is a slap in the face to the millions who fought against Brazil’s own military dictatorship and the leftist corruption of the Workers’ Party era. Bolsonaro, a staunch defender of liberty, warned of such threats during his presidency, and his supporters now see vindication in their distrust of the judiciary. The STF’s actions risk aligning Brazil with the likes of Cuba and Venezuela, nations the Biden administration itself excluded from democratic summits for their authoritarianism.

The Brazilian people deserve better. They deserve a judiciary that upholds the Constitution, not one that idolizes a regime that tramples on human rights. Mendes and Barroso must retract their statements and face accountability for their reckless rhetoric. Congress must act to curb the STF’s growing power, and citizens must demand transparency through every available channel—yes, including the very social media platforms the court seeks to control.

The fight for Brazil’s soul is at a tipping point. If the STF’s leftist justices succeed in steering the nation toward China’s authoritarian model, the consequences will be catastrophic. Conservatives must stand firm, expose this betrayal, and defend the freedoms that define Brazil’s democracy. The world is watching, and so are we.
