One scandal, two scandals and so on. Brazil…

April 8, 2025, Hotspotorlando News.Brazil is simmering with several scandals beyond the postal office issues, reflecting a mix of political, judicial, and economic turbulence. Here’s a rundown of what’s brewing, based on current sentiment and developments:

‘The unfounded accusations the system makes or made against Bolsonaro

One major storm centers on former President Jair Bolsonaro and his circle. He’s tangled in multiple probes, including the “rachadinha” scheme—where staffers allegedly kicked back salaries to his family, with estimates of misappropriated funds reaching into the millions of reais. There’s also the Covaxin scandal, a botched $300 million vaccine deal from 2021 that’s ballooned into a R$1.6 billion corruption allegation, and a R$16.5 million case involving illegal jewelry imports tied to Saudi gifts. Posts on X highlight these, with figures like R$200,000 in campaign funds and R$8 million in assets under scrutiny, though exact numbers vary and investigations are ongoing. Bolsonaro’s allies call it a witch hunt, while critics see it as long-overdue accountability.

The Supreme Court drama. Leaks suggest Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a polarizing figure, might be overseeing evidence tampering in high-profile cases. X posts from early 2025 claim his aide, Leonardo, was caught in emails plotting to manipulate records, potentially targeting political foes. This has fueled outrage among Bolsonaro supporters, who already view Moraes as a biased enforcer after he spearheaded probes into “digital militias” and January 8, 2023, rioters. The court’s push to unravel Operation Car Wash convictions—dismissing 115 cases by late 2024, per anticorruption groups—adds to the chaos, with critics arguing it’s letting crooks off the hook while defenders say it’s correcting overzealous prosecutions.

On the economic front, the “Esquema dos Tratores” (Tractor Scheme) is gaining traction. Reports suggest R$3 billion was siphoned from agricultural programs via overpriced equipment deals under Lula’s watch, echoing the Correios superfaturamento playbook. X chatter ties this to rural unrest and accuses the PT of old habits dying hard. Similarly, the “Escândalo dos Ônibus Escolares” alleges R$732 million in padded contracts for school buses, with auditors sniffing out kickbacks to local officials. Neither has hit full boil yet, but they’re stoking conservative fury over public fund misuse.

Lula’s administration isn’t dodging the heat either. The “Caso Wal do Açaí” keeps popping up—claims that a ghost employee, Walderice Santos, drew a salary for years while selling açaí in Bolsonaro’s hometown, now twisted into a broader attack on PT payroll padding. Meanwhile, the “Cheques do Queiroz” saga, linked to Bolsonaro’s wife Michelle receiving R$89,000 from a family fixer, is being rehashed to counter Lula’s anti-corruption rhetoric. These are more political mudslinging than fresh scandals, but they’re keeping tensions high.

Finally, there’s a slow-burn environmental angle. Deforestation in the Amazon spiked in early 2025, with X posts alleging illegal logging rings tied to state officials are slipping through Lula’s green promises. No hard numbers yet, but it’s a scandal-in-waiting if evidence firms up.
