STF Blocks Milei’s Visit to Bolsonaro While 16 Foreigners Visited Lula in Prison

STF Blocks Milei’s Visit to Bolsonaro While 16 Foreigners Visited Lula in Prison

    By Hotspotnews – Brasília, July 20, 2026

In yet another display of selective justice, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) has barred Argentine President Javier Milei from visiting former President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest. The decision, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes on July 18, underscores a troubling pattern of unequal treatment depending on one’s political alignment.

Moraes, the same minister overseeing the case that sentenced Bolsonaro to over 27 years in prison over alleged coup-related charges, ruled that the meeting would have a “political-electoral nature.” He imposed a 30-day ban on all visits to Bolsonaro as punishment for an alleged violation of prior restrictions. This effectively prevents Milei — a sitting head of state and ideological ally — from greeting Bolsonaro during his planned trip to Brazil on July 25, which also includes attending Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign launch.

The hypocrisy is glaring. During the 580 days Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spent in Federal Police custody in Curitiba (2018–2019), he received at least 16 foreign visitors, including former heads of state, Nobel laureates, activists, and leftist intellectuals. Many of these encounters were followed by political statements and media interviews. Lula was even allowed to coordinate aspects of Fernando Haddad’s presidential campaign from prison, with little interference from the courts at the time.

Bolsonaro, by contrast, faces strict isolation despite documented health issues. Visits are limited almost exclusively to family, lawyers, and doctors. A simple diplomatic courtesy from Milei is treated as a threat, while Lula’s prison cell operated more like a political salon.

This is not about rule of law — it is about control. The Brazilian judiciary, particularly under certain activist ministers, continues to apply standards that favor one side of the political spectrum while punishing the other. Conservatives are monitored, censored, and restricted; left-aligned figures enjoy flexibility and institutional protection.

The blocking of Milei’s visit sends a clear message: Brazil’s institutions fear the growing alignment of conservative leaders across Latin America. Milei’s libertarian reforms in Argentina and Bolsonaro’s enduring popularity in Brazil represent a direct challenge to the entrenched left-wing consensus.

Brazil deserves better. True democracy requires equal application of the law, not weaponized justice. Until judicial reform restores balance and accountability, episodes like this will only deepen public distrust and highlight the urgent need for change. The resistance continues.
