Brazil: The Court Protects Its Own First

    By Hotspotnews

André Mendonça unsealed a Federal Police report showing Daniel Vorcaro’s messages and meetings with Alexandre de Moraes, a large contract with Moraes’ wife’s law firm, and Vorcaro’s later account of pressure from PF agents. Moraes answered by asking that Mendonça himself be investigated. Edson Fachin then pulled that request out of Moraes’ Fake News inquiry and gave Moraes, Mendonça, Paulo Gonet and Andrei Rodrigues five working days to explain themselves. Those steps are documented by Folha, O Globo, VEJA and Agência Brasil.

Andrei Rodrigues is not a neutral technician in this story. He headed Lula’s security detail in 2022 and was named PF director-general at the start of the current government. Reporting in VEJA and Folha records that he has unusually direct access to the Planalto and that Mendonça himself described that proximity as inadequate. Vorcaro told Mendonça’s office he had a cordial earlier relationship with Rodrigues that included events and invitations. Gonet, also indicated and later reappointed by Lula, had previously been named in contacts involving Vorcaro’s circle.

Lula then went on camera to demand investigations “whoever it hurts” while attacking “selective leaks” and calling for judicial reform. That is the public posture of a president whose government appointed two of the officials now under review and whose son appears in related inquiries.

A five-day internal pause can look like due process. It can also look like the Court managing its own scandal. Conservatives are entitled to notice the difference. Institutions that investigate everyone except the people closest to power do not restore public trust. They confirm the suspicion that the rules change when the names get too close to the Planalto.

The documents are already public. The connections are already reported. What remains is whether the Court treats those facts as inconvenient paperwork or as the beginning of real accountability.
