Florida Highway Patrol troopers will soon be deputized for federal immigration enforcement.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced the formal agreement between the state and the Department of Homeland Security during a news conference Friday morning.
It would allow FHP troopers to be trained and approved by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and arrest and detain illegal immigrants caught coming into the U.S.
“We didn’t hesitate to step up. We will take advantage of this and we will be strong partners. The goal is we need to reestablish interior enforcement in this country,” Gov. DeSantis said.
ov. DeSantis said it will take a while for the state to fully implement the agreement since troopers will need to be trained.
State troopers are already helping federal agencies arrest illegal immigrants across Florida.
