Nuclear Diplomacy Stalls as Israel Claims Assassination of Top Iranian Commander
By Hotspotorlando NEWS
*June 21, 2025* – Nuclear talks between Iran and world powers are crumbling as Israel intensifies its military campaign, announcing the killing of a senior Iranian commander. The ongoing air war, now in its second week, has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict and cast a shadow over efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Targeted Strike Amid Escalation

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the assassination of Saeed Izadi, a senior commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, in a precision airstrike on an apartment in Qom, Iran. Izadi was a key figure in Iran’s support for Palestinian groups, including Hamas, and reportedly had prior knowledge of Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Israel also claimed the deaths of two other commanders: Behnam Shahriyari, who managed weapons transfers to Iran-backed proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas, and Aminpour Joudaki, head of Iran’s drone operations, in separate strikes in Tehran.
These killings follow Israel’s June 13 strikes, which eliminated top military leaders, including Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, armed forces chief of staff, and Gen. Hossein Salami, IRGC head. Dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” the campaign also targeted Iran’s nuclear research facility in Isfahan, damaging a centrifuge manufacturing workshop. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the attack but noted no nuclear material was present.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi condemned the strikes as a deliberate sabotage of diplomacy, accusing Israel of undermining nuclear negotiations. Speaking at a meeting in Istanbul, Araqchi said Iran would not negotiate under military threat, demanding Israel’s attacks cease.
Nuclear Talks at a Breaking Point
Israel’s strikes aim to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls an existential threat. Yet, analysts argue that destroying Iran’s nuclear infrastructure may be impossible without U.S. support, especially for fortified sites like the Fordow enrichment facility.
Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and monitored by the IAEA. However, a former Iranian negotiator warned that Israel’s aggression could push Tehran to pursue nuclear weapons, potentially abandoning cooperation with the U.N. watchdog. U.S. intelligence suggests Iran’s leadership has not authorized a nuclear weapons program since 2003, though President Donald Trump has claimed Iran could achieve nuclear capability soon.
The IAEA’s chief urged restraint, warning that strikes on nuclear facilities risk catastrophic consequences. As Israel’s campaign continues, the window for diplomacy narrows, raising the specter of a broader conflict with global stakes.
