Lula’s Disgraceful Embrace of Iran at BRICS Summit

Lula’s Disgraceful Embrace of Iran at BRICS Summit Undermines U.S. Alliance

    and Endangers Global Stability

    By Laiz Rodrigues

In a move that can only be described as a disgraceful betrayal of democratic values and a direct snub to the United States, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed Ehsan Khandouzi, Iran’s Finance and Economic Affairs Minister, at the 2025 BRICS summit in Brazil. This interaction, captured on video and widely circulated, is not merely a diplomatic gesture but a stark reminder of Lula’s willingness to impose his radical agenda at the expense of Brazil’s long-standing relationship with the U.S. and the broader Western world.

The BRICS summit, ostensibly a platform for economic cooperation among emerging markets, has increasingly become a stage for anti-Western sentiment, with Iran’s recent inclusion in the bloc exacerbating these tensions. Iran, a regime notorious for its support of terrorism, human rights abuses, and nuclear ambitions, is everything but democratic. Under the guise of economic partnership, Lula’s warm reception of Khandouzi signals a dangerous alignment with a state that directly threatens global stability and the interests of free nations.

This act is particularly egregious given the current global climate, marked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance against Iran and its proxies. Trump’s reimposition of sanctions following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 was a clear message to the international community: Iran’s destabilizing behavior would not be tolerated. By entertaining Khandouzi, Lula not only disregards these sanctions but also undermines the U.S.-led effort to isolate Iran economically and politically. This blatant disregard for U.S. policy will undoubtedly strain the already fragile relationship between Brazil and the United States, a relationship that has historically been foundational to Brazil’s security and economic prosperity.

The dangers of Lula’s approach are manifold. First, engaging with Iran legitimizes a regime that has consistently violated international norms. Iran’s support for terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, its ballistic missile program, and its oppressive domestic policies are well-documented. By extending a hand to Khandouzi, Lula sends a message that Brazil is willing to overlook these grave concerns for the sake of short-term economic gains or geopolitical posturing. This not only endangers regional stability but also risks entangling Brazil in conflicts that are not its own.

Second, Lula’s actions at the BRICS summit reflect a broader pattern of imposing his radical agenda, one that prioritizes ideological alignment with authoritarian regimes over democratic principles. His government’s overtures to China and Russia, both of which have their own records of human rights abuses and aggression, further illustrate this troubling trend. The BRICS bloc, under Lula’s influence, is morphing into a counterweight to Western democratic alliances, a development that poses a direct threat to the liberal international order that has underpinned global peace and prosperity for decades.

The damage to the U.S.-Brazil relationship cannot be overstated. The United States has been Brazil’s largest trading partner and a key ally in security matters. Lula’s embrace of Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, is a slap in the face to American interests and values. It risks inviting retaliatory measures from the U.S., including economic sanctions or a reevaluation of military and intelligence cooperation. Such a deterioration in relations would not only harm Brazil’s economy but also isolate it on the global stage, pushing it further into the orbit of hostile powers.

Moreover, Lula’s actions are a disgrace to the Brazilian people, who deserve a leader committed to upholding democratic values and fostering alliances with like-minded nations. Instead, Lula has chosen to align Brazil with a regime that suppresses its own citizens, funds terrorism, and seeks to undermine the international community. This is not statesmanship; it is a reckless abandonment of principle for the sake of ideological vanity.

In conclusion, Lula’s interaction with Iran’s minister at the BRICS summit is a disgraceful act that imposes his radical agenda at the expense of Brazil’s relationship with the United States and the safety of the free world. It endangers global stability, legitimizes an undemocratic regime, and risks severe repercussions for Brazil. Conservative leaders and citizens must condemn this behavior and demand a foreign policy that prioritizes democracy, human rights, and alliance with the West. Anything less is a betrayal of Brazil’s heritage and its future.
