The Bolsonaro Persecution Narrative Crumbles Further: One More Domino Falls

    By Hotspotnews

In a significant development that underscores the selective nature of Brazil’s judicial machinery, Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes has archived the investigation against former President Jair Bolsonaro in the so-called “Abin Paralela” case. While the probe against his son Carlos and other associates continues in lower courts, the decision removes Bolsonaro himself from this particular line of attack. For years, this investigation—along with a cascade of others—formed the backbone of a relentless campaign portraying Bolsonaro as the architect of shadowy espionage and institutional subversion. Today, that pillar shows visible cracks.

This ruling arrives amid a broader pattern. What began as an avalanche of inquiries, leaks, and dramatic headlines aimed at painting the former leader as an existential threat to democracy has steadily lost momentum. Major accusations that once dominated headlines have either collapsed under scrutiny, been reclassified, or quietly sidelined. The “parallel Abin” story, rooted in claims of illegal monitoring during his administration, joins a growing list of narratives that failed to deliver the knockout blow their promoters anticipated. Bolsonaro, despite facing intense pressure, house arrest conditions, and a heavy sentence in the separate coup-related matter, watches yet another front in the legal war dissipate.

Critics of the establishment have long argued this was never purely about law—it was lawfare, a weaponized judiciary deployed to neutralize a political adversary whose popularity refused to fade. Each time a case advances or fades, the asymmetry becomes clearer: swift action against Bolsonaro and his circle contrasted with leniency elsewhere. Moraes, the central figure driving many of these proceedings, has become a lightning rod, symbolizing for many the concentration of power in unelected hands. Archiving the Abin probe against the ex-president doesn’t erase past convictions, but it chips away at the edifice of total culpability that media and political opponents worked so hard to construct.

As Brazil heads toward future electoral cycles, these incremental setbacks for the dominant narrative matter. They reveal a resilience in Bolsonaro’s base and question the sustainability of governance by investigation. Supporters see vindication: not every charge was ironclad, and political differences were criminalized. Detractors will downplay today’s move as procedural housekeeping. Yet the scoreboard is shifting. One by one, the grand stories of unassailable guilt are meeting reality—and reality is proving far more complicated than the script allowed. The battle continues, but the terrain is changing.
