Helicon Chemical Company, an organization utilizing UCF’s Business Incubation Program and established by David Reid ’12PhD, secured a $1.9 million Tactical Funding Increase Contract from the U.S. Air Force in May to expedite its advanced-performance solid rocket propellant research and production. Helicon is the second firm to receive a Tactical Funding Increase Contract under the guidance of UCF’s Business Incubator. The first company, Red Six Aerospace, Inc., was granted a contract in 2022 for creating an augmented reality system. Reid expressed his pride in advancing his propellant technologies and working once again with the U.S. Air Force. He mentioned that this contract signifies a significant milestone in making Helicon’s technology accessible for government and commercial purposes. The Tactical Funding Increase was awarded by AFWERX, a collaborative innovation branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Department of the Air Force. The program aims to facilitate the integration of innovative technologies like Helicon’s rocket propellants for use by the Air Force and other Department of Defense customers on an accelerated schedule. Reid founded Helicon during his final year of graduate studies at UCF with the guidance of Department of Materials Science and Engineering Chair Sudipta Seal. He later transitioned from CEO to chief technology officer in 2022. Helicon, a UCF incubator company, continues to collaborate with UCF students and staff to advance the utilization of its technology. Carol Ann Logue, the director of programs and operations for the Innovation Districts and Incubation Program, expressed satisfaction in assisting Reid and the Helicon team in overcoming business challenges. The UCF incubation program, now in its 24th year, manages nine incubation facilities in Central Florida and neighboring areas, providing specialized support to nurture emerging companies. Logue estimates that there are approximately 130-150 clients at any given time under the Incubation Program, receiving comprehensive assistance in establishing and growing their businesses. Reid utilized specialized facilities, mentorship, and insights from marketing experts from the UCF Business Incubation Program. Logue highlighted that Helicon’s achievement of securing the contract demonstrates the company’s importance in the defense innovation landscape. Entrepreneurs looking to launch or expand their businesses are encouraged to explore eligibility criteria and apply on the program’s website.
